Lost is over … now what?

My favorite TV show ever, by far, is over. The season finale of Lost was tonight, and after six years of dedication… I don’t know what I’m going to do, at least when it comes to television.

Since 2004, the first semester of my senior year of high school, I had been extremely interested in this show. Lost made you think. It stretched your imagination. The characters were complex and dynamic. The plot was unique.

I don’t think I will ever be interested in a show like I was in Lost. Most TV today is simple, straightforward and predictable, e.g., cop shows where the bad guy gets caught or medical shows where the doctors come through.

But Lost cannot be summarized in a paragraph. A group of people survives a plane crash on some “special” topical island. There’s time travel, mythology and alternate timelines. Nobody really seems to know what’s going on.

The finale did not answer some of the big questions: what exactly was the island? What was the significance of Jacob and the Man in Black? What happened to the characters on the island after the final scene?

It seems the show focused more on the relationships between the characters, which is hardly unforgivable; they are what drove the show. It seemed a little cheesy, though, to have all of the characters –presumably deceased — reunited in the alternate timeline in some kind of a heaven/purgatory afterlife.

I will most likely spend the next few weeks wracking my brain over what happened. I still feel like I need some kind of closure.

With Alias and Lost — and to some extent Prison Break — I have gone from 2001 to 2010 (nine years is about 40 percent of my life now) watching such compelling shows. Now I have no idea what I will watch on TV.

Probably nothing. I don’t foresee anything being able to compete with Lost.
